Don’t listen to my best friend when she swears I’m one crazy shopaholic. I think I’ve been doing a good job curbing the plastic swipes for sometime. Besides, the perfect antidote for I-have-to-shop-for-new-shoes hormones is paying extra time in a book store (although it might be a different story when it comes to purchasing books). It’s the perfect way to kill time and flip through some fantastic titles that I wouldn’t otherwise buy if I’m being practical.

See, I wait a lot. I wait for friends to before we have dinner (OK, 50% of the time I arrive rather early). I wait for my aunties to finish grocery shopping (absolutely hate doing this). I wait to be fetched on those rare instances I don’t have my car with me. And for all the time spent waiting, there will always be an interesting read to flip through.

So what do you flip through when waiting?

I have a preference for travel and food books—light reading, lovely photos, and yes, a quick-fix for a new adventure. Today, while waiting for my brother to fetch me, I spotted this title at Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street.

So who would refuse a book entitled “1001 Foods You Must Try Before You Die”? Hungry as I am, this book proved to be quite a treat, with sections on Fruits, Vegetables, Dairy, Fish, Meat, Breads, and Sweets. Each section details the flavor and history of must-try tastes. I sure as hell can’t cook beyond anything fried to save my life, but I thoroughly enjoyed leafing through the pages of this book—you can almost imagine the culinary adventure that awaits.

On a side note, I’m happy that the Philippines was mentioned several times in this book, even if the entries I spotted were for calamansi, banana ketchup, and bull’s testicles. Really, Philippine cuisine is interesting, even if largely unknown to the rest of the world.
